Review

"I recommend Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less, by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang...The title says it all-if you're prone to burnout or still believe that overwork actually works, this book will set you straight."―Arianna Huffington in an interview with Lifehacker.com"[Pang] writes with an admirable focus on balance, on pleasure as well as success; in the end, it's difficult to argue with his conclusions."―Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe"Consider this a much-needed guide for the overworked: a credible, factual case for chilling out and getting rest, by a well-known Silicon Valley consultant."―VanityFair.com"Whether by making space for daily naps, as Winston Churchill did during World War II; going on hours-long strolls like Charles Darwin; or spending a week alone in a cabin like Bill Gates, pursuing what Pang calls 'deliberate rest' is the true key to fulfillment and creative success."―BizTimes"Blending scientific research with examples of writers, painters and thinkers, from Darwin to Stephen King, the author exposes how we have underestimated the power of rest for our success." ―Daily Examiner (Australia)"Finally, a full-throated, exhaustively researched argument for why we should all work less and rest more-not just because we'll feel better (no small thing) but because we'll actually be more creative and productive as a result."―Mason Currey, author of Daily Rituals: How Artists Work"Alex Pang wants us to treat work and rest as equals. In his fascinating, well-researched and highly readable new book Rest, he makes an excellent case for the critical importance of rest in our lives, drawing from the rest habits of some of our most famous scientists, writers and creatives from history, from neuroscience research as well as examples from some of the most productive people working today. You will consider how and why you rest in a completely new light after reading this book."―Wendy Suzuki, Ph.D. professor of neural science and psychology at New York University and author of Healthy Brain Happy Life"Finally, indisputable proof that to raise happy, healthy, and productive adults, parents and educators must teach the next generation how to practice intentional rest...how to partner work with play, exercise, and sleep."―Nanci Kauffman, head of Castilleja School"I love this book. Rest weaves fascinating research and captivating stories into a wise prescription for a healthier, more creative, and more fulfilling life in a technology saturated world. At heart, it is rest, in the many ways Pang describes, that contributes to our ability to be the best of what we can be."―Linda Stone, former executive, Apple and Microsoft"You're holding some terrific advice in your hands on the virtues of walking, napping, and playing. Pang has written a delightful and thought-provoking book on the science of restful living."―Clive Thompson, columnist for Wired magazine and the author of Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better

If living excitedly and hurriedly would only enable us to do more, then there would be some compensation, some excuse, for doing so. But the exact reverse is the case. That was the opinion of William James, the philosopher, psychologist and physician in 1899. I wonder what he would say of our 24/7, always-on world, where the concept of turning off is an anachronism? Many business people today treat stress and overwork as a badge of honour, and will brag about how little they sleep and how few vacation days they take. However, as Dr Soojung-Kim Pang shows it is a mistake to think of rest as nothing more than the absence of work. Rest is work’s partner that, when correctly understood, improves output exponentially, and the quality of our lives commensurately. We have made astounding discoveries in sleep research, psychology, neuroscience, organizational behaviour, sports medicine, sociology, and other fields over the last couple of decades. These discoveries have shown the critical role that rest plays in strengthening the brain, enhancing learning, enabling inspiration, and making innovation sustainable. The book reviews the achievements of world-class musicians, Olympic athletes, writers, designers, and other accomplished and creative people. It shows how they alternate daily periods of intense work and concentration with long restful breaks of the right kind.Rest is a skill like singing or running that everyone basically knows how to do. However, with a deeper understanding, you can learn to do it a lot better, and enjoy more profound rest and be more refreshed and restored. It’s often when you’re not obviously working, or trying to work, that you can have some of your best ideas. According to a 2014 survey, one in five start-up founders got the idea for their company during vacations. The author doesn’t propose a single ‘correct’ system because he doesn’t believe that there’s a single way we all should work. The principle of ‘deliberate rest’ needs to be adapted to your work, whatever that is.The book has many suggestions of how to enhance the quality of your work through deliberate rest.Start with this insight: “If some of history’s greatest figures didn’t put in immensely long hours, maybe the key to unlocking the secret of their creativity lies in understanding not just how they laboured but how they rested, and how the two relate.”Illinois Institute of Technology professors Van Zelst and Kerr surveyed their colleagues’ work habits and schedules. If you expected a correlation between the hours scientists worked, and the number of articles they published, you would be mistaken. The curve rose steeply at first and peaked at between 10-20 hours per week. Then it turned downward so that scientists who spent twenty-five hours in the workplace were no more productive than those who spent five.Researchers of world-class performers tend to focus only on measurable forms of work, and then try to make those more effective and more productive. What is overlooked is whether there are other ways to improve performance. There is a popularised belief that world-class performance comes after 10,000 hours of practice. In fact, world-class performance only comes after 10,000 hours of deliberate practice; 12,500 hours of deliberate rest; and 30,000 hours of sleep. For many thinkers and doers, a walk is an essential part of their daily routine, a source of exercise and solitude. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick walks forty miles a week on the indoor track at the company’s headquarters and walking meetings have become popular, especially among Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and CEOs. Steve Jobs was famous for his walking meetings around the leafy streets of Palo Alto. LinkedIn, Google, Facebook and others have walking paths around their headquarters. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle came to Heisenberg during a late-night walk in Copenhagen in 1927. He had been working on the uncertainty problem for almost two years.Walking doesn’t look like an intellectual activity, and there are plenty of times when it’s purely utilitarian or recreational, but we can learn to use it to help us think better. Many creative people are diligent about carrying notebooks when they walk.An underestimated form of rest is the nap, and the preferred time for a nap is the hour after lunch. Winston Churchill had the daily routine of a nap in the afternoon during WW11, as did Douglas Mac-Arthur and Dwight Eisenhower. Kennedy would normally take a 45-minute nap after lunch, and Lyndon Johnson, broke up his long day with a nap and shower in the afternoon. It was not that these men had comfortable corporate job: they were saving or running the world, with all its problems.Hitler, in contrast, kept erratic hours. As the Allies closed in on Germany, he tried to stay up for days at a time, powered by a mix of amphetamines, cocaine, and other drugs.A twenty-minute power nap is enough to give you a mental recharge without leaving you groggy. Power naps boost your ability to concentrate by giving your body a chance to restore depleted energy and increased alertness. But there are other benefits such as improving memory and consolidating things you’ve just learned. A power nap improves emotional regulation and self-control, reduces impulsiveness, and improves frustration tolerance. All are critical leadership skills.Sleep deprivation has immediate effects on your ability to focus, make good judgments, perform under pressure, and be creative. Long-term sleep deprivation can affect your mental health and physical condition. If you were raised (as I was,) on the heroics of “pulling all-nighters”, know that advanced science shows that to be as intelligent as driving cars at break-neck speed in urban areas.Humans need to sleep about seven hours a night on average, and paradoxically, it’s restful because our brains aren’t really shutting down. Instead while we sleep, our bodies shift into maintenance mode and devote themselves to storing energy, fixing or replacing damaged cells, and growing while our brains clean out toxins. The day’s experiences and problems that have been occupying us, are processed. Our emotional resources are as important for workers as physical energy is for athletes. German sociologist Sabine Sonnentag, has studied how opportunities for recharging the physical and emotional batteries affects workers’ health and well-being, job satisfaction, productivity, and resilience. Across professions the findings have been consistent: people who take opportunities to get away, mentally switch off, and devote their energies elsewhere, are more productive. They also have better attitudes, get along better with their colleagues, and are better able to deal with challenges at work.Four major factors contribute to recovery: relaxation, control, mastery-experiences, and mental detachment from work. “Breaks that are high in all four are the equivalent of nutritious meals; those that don’t, are like empty calories,” notes the author.Relaxation is an activity that’s pleasant and undemanding. Control is choosing what you will do on vacation, being crew not a passenger. Mastery-experiences are engaging, interesting and require effort. They are often challenging, mentally absorbing and so are more rewarding when you do them well. In Bletchley Park during World War II, for example, chess was a popular pastime among code-breakers.Mental detachment from all work issues is necessary to promote recovery. People who carry work smartphones during non-work hours, or who have to keep in touch with the office while they’re on vacation, have higher levels of stress and work-family conflict.Work and rest and two sides of the same coin. Taking shorter but more frequent vacations every few months provides greater levels of recovery because it is integrated into the work routine, rather than the quite separate annual vacation. Recovery is active, not passive, and we must design it to get greater benefit.Physical stamina is also as important for creative work as for manual labour. President Barack Obama maintained a strict fitness routine throughout his political career, with daily workouts seen as a key to surviving long campaigns and the rigors of governing. The impact of sports on the careers of businesswomen may be even stronger. In 2014, four hundred female executives were surveyed about their athletic experiences. 97% of the executives who had “chief” in their titles, had played sports at some point in their lives, 52% had played sports in college, and 53% still played some sport. We shouldn’t be surprised that people manage to be physically active and do world-class work. We should recognize though that they do world-class work because they are physically active.“In this book, I’ve argued that we should treat work and rest as equals; that we should treat rest as a skill; that the best, most restorative kinds of rest are active; and that when practiced well, rest can make us more creative and productive.”Taking rest seriously requires recognizing its importance, and boldly making space for rest in our daily lives.I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It could be life-changing.Readability Light ---+- SeriousInsights High +---- LowPractical High -+--- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author of the recently released The Executive Update.

I'm one of those people who has been rather "busy" for many years. And I've always been fascinated by the creative process. So I was intrigued by Alex Pang's book. It's a series of thoughtful arguments on how rest not only fuel's really creative work, it can fuel a more fulfilling and well-functioning life--as rest invigorates both the body and the brain. I was most fascinated by the idea of super creative people leaving lots of time to wander, go on walk, take naps, etc.Among just about all the children I know, there is a frenetic pace of school and sports and studying and stuff, with little time to really rest and think randomly and just hang out. Would love to see this kind of thinking feed into approaches that might shift this over-scheduled pace to one that would more directly encourage rest and creativity over a full schedule.

This book is outstanding! I read the library book before I ordered my own copy. I recommend it to anyone who is trying to do difficult or creative work; the tips in this book will help you use rest to do your work better, and to be more creative. I am already using the tips to improve my life and my work. Also see his other book, The Distraction Addiction--it is not quite as good, but there is useful information and food for thought there as well.

Only about half way through and enjoying the content very much.I have to say that the author is Not particularly riveting. But, if you can get past the boring prose there is some fascinating content here. Well worth the read!

I've been cheated. I studied the works of so many geniuses, and only finally learned when I read this book that they made their brilliant accomplishments by working in a focused way ONLY 4-6 hours a day. And taking 8-12 hours a day for relaxing, exercising, walking, socializing, gardening, fooling around -- and RESTING. Read about the Default Mode Network of the brain, in which it does valuable work through daydreaming. I'm telling you, this book can change your style and make you twice as effective -- through kicking back, loving yourself and taking it easy.

A good read that highlights the importance of sleep, although I was hoping for more info on how to get the right amount of sleep and although there is some, I still wanted more

Was this written by a data analyst? Could've been shorter and more to the point for better impact and a light read. It has a lot of examples.

A top 5 book, really enjoyed everything about Pangs exegesis on the importance of rest. It revitalizes your work as much as your work invigorates your sense of like and deep activities. Wonderful read!

As CEO of Voy.gs, a website dedicated to expanding international education, we thought this book will definitely serve as a great source of information for students, parents or study abroad professionals!

Good for the rookie (whether student or professional) in the study abroad field. If you are a seasoned study abroad professional, it may be too basic.

Great resource

Wasn't as expected and returned it.

I studied abroad in Chile when I was in college and I wish I'd had this book before that trip. It's a fabulous resource for every student and their parents. It’s a practical guide that covers just about everything a student needs to know about study abroad. The authors have taken special care to include the perspectives of a diverse array of students, including a student with muscular dystrophy who studied abroad in Tanzania, a gay student who lived with a family in Buenos Aires, a black student who had amusing encounters with Chinese cab drivers (at first the driver didn’t believe she was American, but then he had “a complete moment of clarity” and said “Oooooo I know! Barack Obama daughter!!!” Her response? “Yes, sir. You are right.”)The book lists lots of different scholarship programs (like the Fulbright, Gilman and Boren scholarships) and includes anecdotes from dozens of students from a wide range of socioeconomic and academic backgrounds, who describe their experiences studying in just about every country you can imagine. The book covers the entire experience: why study abroad is so important in this globalized era, how to decide if it’s right for you, how to choose the right program, how to figure out the financials, how to prepare, how to immerse yourself in the local culture, how to stay safe and healthy, how to make the most of your time, how to transition back into life at “home,” how to highlight your study abroad experience on a resumé… and more.Reading this book reminded me of how much support I had when I studied abroad. My parents were both super-supportive, both in terms of their own histories (Dad studied in Brazil in high school, Mom studied in Germany in college) and the finances (though I think it cost about the same as normal tuition... study abroad programs can be expensive but this book illustrates that they can also be affordable, especially when you choose the right program and apply for scholarships.) A high school English teacher told us that the University of California was especially good for study abroad, with plenty of options for academic credit and financial aid. My school was incredibly supportive — I had some registration problems while I was abroad, and my advisor stood in line on my behalf to get it resolved. If I hadn’t had all that support, studying abroad would have been much harder! This book would have been an especially useful resource. The last two chapters, about what happens after study abroad, would have been most helpful to me when I was in college. I’m glad the book gives tips for dealing with re-entry, especially how to frame your study abroad experiences as you move forward and apply for jobs. The book motivated me to search for opportunities to study abroad again. A masters’ degree in Europe could be fascinating! (Shhh…)In short, this book is a must-read for every college student and their parents. It’s inspiring, practical, and vivid.

This book covers the entire study abroad experience - from the process of actually making the decision, all the way through to after you've made it back to your home country. It is such a helpful read for those who are planning on studying abroad. When I was preparing for my adventures overseas, I would have loved to have something like this; I had so many questions that I had to search out on different websites and such. If I had this book back then, I would not have had to do any of that, as everything is included inside this book. It also features many different people who completed a study abroad time, giving their input on their experiences, what they particularly loved, and what they would have done different. It's really great to get the points of view from others who have gone through what you are about to do. Since I've been back, I have been making the steps to move back abroad, as my time was so great. This book has given me different viewpoints and tips on that as well - so while it is a guide to studying abroad, it has advice for everyone who is trying to simply go abroad outside of your home country. Overall, it is a great read, with incredible insight and advice - I would definitely recommend this book!

This book offers a lot to think about for students, parents, educators and business people It makes a strong case for the value of study abroad as an integral part of a global education in the 21st century. The case is significantly enhanced by quotes and testimonials from various stakeholders. These first person narratives let the reader tap into the knowledge of a broad spectrum of trusted advisers. The range of study abroad locations and experiences offer a valuable insider's view. It was extremely helpful to read the direct perspective and advice of so many individuals without leaving my suburban couch. These straightforward thoughts feel like advice from friends -- so valuable to get when considering a potentially anxiety-filled experience. I studied in Spain and worked in Russia, and I found this book a very interesting read as my own children consider study abroad options over the next few years.

This book is exactly what I wish we had had before my oldest daughter went to Costa Rica for a semester. The book goes way beyond the academic exploration of the "going abroad experience," and includes concrete advice from the real experts--people who have learned from living abroad (including the author herself). The presentation is friendly and totally unintimidating. I didn't feel overwhelmed by dense blocks of information (which would have made me tense--if I miss a word, will it be the most important word to my daughter's success?!) Students will know what questions to ask before they even decide if the destination or experience is the right choice for them. The answers will help them set realistic expectations from the get go--so there will be fewer surprises. That will reduce anxiety for students(and their parents!) once they are actually living in another country. My second daughter will definitely us this book when planning her going abroad semester.

If you need to discover all about a certain time period's costume details, this book isn't what you need. However, as a fantasy writer, I find this book an incredibly useful tool in helping me get the right word for costume parts. Organized in the form of a dictionary, the book requires you to know what you are looking to find; but it's still useful as more than a dictionary: You can look under general topics, such as 'skirts' or 'sleeves' and learn a lot about various styles in a backwards fashion. All in all, a bit difficult to use, but a good book to have in your library.

I am a fan of Mary Brooks Picken's works. I had expected the book to be heavier with assumed content. It changed after turning a few pages. In the middle of the book there are monotone pictures of historical garments on unknown and forever known people. The illustrations are black and white, nice to look at (vintage + classy) and it reads like a dictionary, not an encyclopaedia. There are so many names or history behind garments I'd taken for granted, little considered, or was unexposed to until this book. It is true, there is no pattern breakdown. However, there are some great descriptions for hand-sewing that are both standard and highly unusual. I can't imagine I won't refer to it again and again until it falls apart someday. I do recommend this book!

I just received my copy today, and I am thrilled with it. It is exactly what I was hoping for, a useful, easy to pick up (it's lightweight and not so large that it's a difficult reference), simple to use reference material for our costume shop. Includes broader headings (sportswear), as well as specifics, the pictures are great (although more would be helpful), and there are fabric descriptions as well. Highly recommended as a reference, do not purchase as a reading book. Perfect for a work setting.

This book is going to come in handy as I start historical sewing.

This book was a gift for my sister-in-law, who was preparing a fashion show of vintage clothing left by her mother and others in a small town in coastal Maine. She found the book a core resource for her commentary,

This book cover all. Very good.

Truly a "dictionary". Handy as a reference tool to look up a historical clothing term but in my mind, pictures are worth a thousand words and it could use lots more pictures instead of simply, word definitions.

Great book

If you are new to the GMAT and looking for a quicker prep plan, Kaplan Premier is a good book to work with - it provides a good intro to the test (explains the mechanics, basic principles, gets you familiar with the test structure, etc), has solid strategies that you can use regardless of your level, and finally, comes with 5 Adaptive tests. Think of it a starter camera/computer/car/etc - you don't want to start with anything expensive before you know what you are looking for. On the flip side, this book will last you for 3-4 weeks and most likely will only boost your score by 50-75 points. If you want a greater increase (and have 3 months to study, skip this book and pick a bigger caliber package from Manhattan GMAT or Veritas Prep that have a comprehensive overview of everything GMAT-related).~~~ THE GOOD: ~~~* Quite a few practice questions* Solid material with proven Math and Verbal strategies as well as formulas/etc background* 49 pages covering Integrated Reasoning* 6 Full GMAT Tests (5 are in adaptive CAT format on the online and 1 is in a paper format in the book)* Online practice with additional exercises and quizzes - 18 online drills* Much of general info on gmat has been moved into online video format, called Fast Fact Videos; that helps with learning when you have had too much reading for the day* Great value for the money with 6 Full GMAT tests, practice questions, and many online Quizzes* Good amount of coverage for the INTEGRATED REASONING.~~~ THE BAD: ~~~* Errors - I have spotted a few typos and issues with explanations; I suspect there may be a few more* Access to the online components expires after 6 months. This is the only reason to buy a new book vs used* NO CD/DVD - online content only for Tests* Does not have the depth and width a 700+ score requires* 1,100 Pages and 6 LBS! - not a travel size book~~~ OTHER STUDY OPTIONS & BOOKS ~~~Many applicants, bypass Kaplan Premier completely and head straight for the more specialized books such as the Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides, Fourth Edition OR Complete GMAT Course Set - 15 Book. These book sets come with 8-15 books that are targeting specific Math and Verbal areas. You have a much better chance getting a 700+ with those book sets (not guaranteed) but they also do require at least 2.5-3 months to cover them. The MGMAT Books come with 6 adaptive online tests. Veritas Prep books come with tests as well BUT only if you purchase from their website (Ugh) Finally, a book you should also now about is the The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 13th Edition (more on that is below)~~~ SOME OTHER THOUGHTS: ~~~* What is a good study plan using Kaplan Premier? My recommendation would be to start with this book, finish it in about a month or so (by this time you will learn all the basics about the test, how it works, what is tested, and general strategies for answering questions). Then, you an figure out what's the best use of your time - you may have reached your target score and can stop or perhaps you are really lacking in Quant or Verbal and need a lot more serious practice.* Will this book give me 700+ score? For the majority of applicants, No. It is not deep enough for most people out of college to refresh the math and verbal fundamentals. You will most likely need other books to help you get there.* How do I get 700 then? There are several options:1. Review each section separately using the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook and Kaplan GMAT Verbal Workbook2. Thorough/Methodical review of each area - If you have a bit more time, grab the Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides, Fifth Edition OR Complete GMAT Course Set by Veritas - 15 Book. These books are excellent and are actually used in the classroom setting for their classes, so you are definitely get the top books. If you dont need/want the entire collection, see my review for what stand-alone books to get. This plan is likely to get you a higher score with this section but it will also take up more time (about a month more). Decide on the approach based on your starting position, target score, time you have, and willingness to study math and grammar for months without a break.* Any other books I need to know about?YES. There is one - The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 13th Edition. This book is published by the creators of GMAT and contains real GMAT questions. You should also download the Official GMAT Prep software from GMAC's website (it's free).* What if I have trouble getting through this book? Where can I find help? There are several books that can help you get up to speed with quant and grammar:1. For Quantitative section: Manhattan GMAT Foundations of GMAT Math2. For Verbal Section: Foundations of GMAT Verbal by Manhattan GMATLet me know if you have any questions about the book - I reply to comments!Good Luck,BB, GMAT 750 (q49, v42)

I'm a full-time GRE tutor, so I bought this to see if it was a resource I could recommend to my students, who often need to relearn a LOT of math. This book is a solid treatment of the math concepts the GRE tests, as well as a decent overview of the different kinds of questions on the test. But, those with higher than average score goals will need to supplement with other books (and of course everyone should be working with ETS's Official Guide).Things I liked:- covers most of the concepts that can appear on the GRE- each concept has a good number of practice exercises of varying difficulty- the 100 "most important" concepts list at the back is a good checklistThings that could be improved:- the questions are usually too easy - or more importantly, too SIMPLE - the questions on the GRE are usually more creative and complex, especially at the higher score levels- in my opinion, the time management advice only applies to the top 20 percent of scorers- the book seems to have been modeled on the math concepts that the GRE TELLS us the test covers, NOT on actual observation of GRE tests or practice tests. What the GRE says it will test and what it actually does test are sometimes two different things. So what you're getting is coverage of the concepts you'll need to know without getting the difficulty level or complexity of real GRE math questions. This book will help to a degree, but you'll definitely want to use another source of practice material as well. It's a pretty good resource for those who haven't done math in a long time.

I got 99th percentile on my GMAT 750(49, 42) and i used 3 books: this one, Kaplan's Premier Book, and the Verbal Workbook. I had access to PR book and GMAT Prep, but I did only tests from those. I found Kaplan's materials of quality and difficulty. Some whine that Kaplan is too hard, but that's good - if you can handle Kaplan, you can handle the GMAT. Please see the section at the very bottom of the review - I have included a list of my favorite problems from this book - those are the most fun!~~~ PROS: ~~~- Condensed math concept review - straight to the point- No smart-aleck advice about some stupid tricks - only math review - exactly what I needed- Solid problems that illustrate a lot of traps and multiple ways of solving them- Starts with the basics - arithmetic, integers, primes, etc - the stuff that anybody can uses a review of. A lot of applicants underestimate how much they forgot the basics and skim/skip them. I would not do that, and that book does not either.- Finally, the number of questions and quizzes in this book is impressive. I am giving a short summary of some of the sections of the book and number of quizzes and test questions. Quiz questions are math only; Test questions are GMAT-type questions.~~~ CONS: ~~~- No probability or combinations review, which would be very helpful. Get something. I bombed my probability question on the GMAT.- I went through this book at least 3 times (helping others) and I found that solutions don't include some of the most genius ways to handle the problems. I think the authors of the questions went beyond themselves.- Errors (even though this is the 6th edition and it barely changed compared to the 1st and 2nd, there are a few typos and just careless errors - it's a shame)- Not as thorough as the MGMAT guides (those cover more topics in-depth and perhpas a wider area). Also, if you are rusty with math (really rusty), you may want to get the Kaplan Math Foundations or Foundations of GMAT Math by Manhattan GMAT.--- PREVIOUS EDITION ---The changes in the 9th 2015 edition are very minor and you can easily purchase the previous editions (including 8th, and 7th) if the books are cheap enough (often for a fraction of the cost). The books are 99.9% the same with several problematic questions replaced (a few of the advanced questions)Arithmetic-Number operations (15 quiz questions and 15 test questions)-Number properties (15, 19)-Averages (10, 19)-Ratios (10, 24)-Percents (25, 25)-Powers and Roots (12, 17)Algebra-Level One (20, 26)-Level Two (15, 15)Word Problems-Level One (10, 26)-Level Two (37)-Test (40)Geometry-Lines (6, 14)-Triangles (16, 21)-Quadrilaterals (15, 19)-Circles (19, 13)-Multiple Figures (4, 15)-Solids (6, 8)Data Sufficiency-Test 1 (25)-Test 2 (25)~~~ HARD & INTERESTING QUESTIONS ~~~Also, here is the list of the Most Interesting GMAT questions from this book (some are hard and others require an unusual approach) - make sure you can answer every one of them and know how to solve them by heart:Number properties test: 8, 13, 14, 17, 19Averages test: 4, 6Ratios: 22Percents: 4, 7, 8, 22Powers and Roots: 5, 12Algebra test 2: 2, 6Basic Word Problem Exercise (p. 131): 6, 8, 9Word Problems Test 1: 4, 19, 24Percents, Ratios, and Rates: 34General WP Test: 31, 35, 40GeometryTriangles Exercise: 7, 11Triangles Test: 2, 15, 18Quadraliterals and other polygons: 14, 16, 17Circles: 2, 5, 10Multiple Figures: 2, 6, 9, 14Solids: 5DS1: 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24DS2: 3, 7, 9, 10, 15, 21, 23, 24~~~ WHY ONLY 4 STARS? ~~~1. No significant updates over the years. This book has remained virtually unchanged since the second edition (for the last 8 years). You are welcome to purchase any of the previous editions to have the same effect.2. It is a good/great book but there are now other great books out there (MGMAT Guides, Veritas Prep Guides) that give this book a run for its moneyFinally, please make sure you have a copy of the Official Guide for the GMAT (OG) - if you have not discovered it, I highly recommend you get yourself a copy as it is published by GMAC and contains 900 official GMAT Questions.Let me know if you have any questions - I reply to comments!Good Luck on the GMATBB, GMAT 750 (q49, v42)

As with many of Patricia Polacco's books, Mrs. Katz & Tush starts with a friendship, adds a simple story line, seasons it with an understanding look at a particular culture or two, adds a dash of humour, and ties it all together with illustrations that enrich the story (other examples, among many: Babushka Baba Yaga, Just Plain Fancy and Chicken Sunday). In this story the lives of two very different neighbors are drawn together through a small, tail-less kitten named Tush (the name itself brings giggles to the 4 year old set). Larnel, dragged along by his mother to visit an elderly widowed neighbor (and the picture of him in his chair shows you all that you need to know about how he feels about being there!) surprises himself by feeling compassion for lonely Mrs. Katz. He brings her the runt of a litter of kittens, saying that nobody else wants it. Mrs. Katz reluctantly accepts the kitten, on the condition that Larnel will help her learn how to care for it. He agrees, and a life-long friendship is begun. There are so many great parts to this book- the growing understanding about the things that we have in common, no matter how disparate our backgrounds, messages on ethnicity, on generational relationships, and so on- that you could get the idea that this is a 'good-for-you' book. But at it's heart Mrs. Katz & Tush is the work of a master storyteller and illustrator, and is a story that the children ask for again & again & again. Ours are still savouring it after 3 years, and show no signs of growing weary of it. The illustrations- especially some of the expressions- are some of Polacco's best efforts. Don't miss this one!

Must read. Must add to your kid's book collection. So many strong messages and all told with humor and kindness. Love it.

Textbooks on the prophets of the Old Testament are few and far between on the bookshelves in the offices of evangelical pastors today. While revered and affirmed as canonical texts, prophetic literature in the Old Testament is rarely preached and often misunderstood by evangelicals. The message of the prophets is often lost in a world that demands to have its ears tickled by a glorified therapeutic deism that would have Isaiah and Jeremiah shudder. A quick look in a typical Christian bookstore will leave much to be desired in the prophetic literature department. This presents a chicken and egg dilemma. Is it the lack of resources on prophetic literature that limits the preaching of the message of God through the prophets or vice-versa? The man who has greatly aided in solving this growing dilemma of prophetic ignorance is in familiar territory. Willem VanGemeren, professor of Old Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, has proven himself to be a relevant voice heralding the biblical theology of Old Testament texts and biblical themes in his authorship of The Progress of Redemption and his commentary on the Psalms, which is featured in the Expositor’s Bible Commentary.VanGemeren has not just produced a thick space-filler on pastors’ bookshelves, but he has given the evangelical world a refreshing work that will be more often in the hands of the pastor and layman than collecting dust on a shelf. One reason, no doubt, that there are few works on prophetic literature as a whole is that there is so much diversity in prophetic writings that it can be difficult to stay focused on an over-arching theme or central purpose. However, from Moses to Daniel (and everywhere between), VanGemeren gives a rich and comprehensive presentation of the prophetic word in the Old Testament for proper and improved interpretation and application.SummaryBy turning to any page at random in Interpreting the Prophetic Word, it is easy to see that VanGemeren has a burning desire to see the prophetic word of the Old Testament heard, taught, preached, understood, and realized in a time so far removed from the prophets but at the same time so similar to the historical context they found themselves in. VanGemeren has set out in this comprehensive work to herald the “harmonious testimony” of the prophets which coincides with the teaching of the Lord Jesus and the apostles summed up by the author in these repeated words throughout the work: “that our heavenly Father has prepared great things for those who consecrate themselves to him by forming a counterculture, his kingdom on earth” (13).VanGemeren sets out to show that “the different prophetic voices harmoniously witness in their diversity to the purposes of God in redemptive history” (13). The author carefully interprets and sketches the writings and messages of each prophet within redemptive history while being sensitive to the historical-political-economical-societal background that each prophet found himself in. VanGemeren desires to exalt the unity and harmony of the message of the prophets while not eliminating or silencing their diversity. This is what makes this work so unique. Not only does the author faithfully give a short commentary of each piece of Old Testament prophetic literature, but he also ties these individual threads together to form a working and beautiful system aimed at giving the reader a correct lens to interpret and apply these writings. Interpreting the Prophetic Word is systematically divided into four major sections. The book is divided in a way that helps achieve the purpose in bringing together the harmonious diversity of the message of the prophets. Chapters one through three give the reader a much-needed introductory glimpse into the nature of prophetism. Chapter one focuses on the uniqueness of Israel’s state in a pluralistic world. Israel and her prophets worshiped the One True God and had special revelation rather than man-developed religion. The development of prophetism from Moses to Jesus is heavily, if not exclusively, predicated on this reality. The prophets of God relied on revelation from God while the prophets of, let’s say, Baal relied on the religion from man. The tradition of prophetism throughout Israel’s history is then probed in chapter two as the prophets’ office, role, and message are examined from Israel to exile.A brief explanation and description of the message of both the pre-exilic and post-exilic prophets are discussed in chapter two. The first section then closes with a look at the varying perspectives on interpreting and understanding the prophets, which VanGemeren writes is a “truly exciting” venture and honor (70). This look at interpretive models leads into the second major section. The second section looks at the message of the Minor Prophets. Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi are each examined to bring out the historical and literary context of each book as well as focusing on the overarching theme of each book. This section looks both at the Minor Prophets as a whole and individually. This section and the one to follow should be a pastor’s best friend when preaching from the Prophets. Together, sections two and three (which includes the Major Prophets) compile a collection of excellent commentaries that drive home the overall message of each prophet that can often be lost with the high poetry of prophetic literature. Finally, the fourth section, which is actually only one chapter included in Part 3 of the book, is properly titled “Living the Prophetic Word”. It ties the thread of the interpretation of the prophets together with the work of the Spirit, the coming of Christ, and the progress of redemption (354). In the words of VanGemeren, “The prophets, our Lord, and the apostles urgently set before us the way of the Spirit, of the whole counsel of God, and of involvement in the progress of redemption” (355). This chapter allows the reader and interestingly forces him or her to reconcile the diversity of the prophets with the overall theme of Scripture within redemptive history. In other words, VanGemeren argues in this closing chapter that interpretation of the prophetic word of the Old Testament must involve the power of the Spirit, Tota Scriptura, and the progress of redemption. Critical EvaluationThe scholarship and extensive research VanGemeren put into this volume is easily noticed by even a short skim over each chapter. There are many things about this work that make it relevant in our time and worthy of reading. The overall setup of the book makes it a wonderful resource for reference. For example, the major sections of this book, parts two and three, would be bookmarked and highlighted heavily by the pastor preaching a sermon series through Jonah or Micah, to name a couple. The organization of Interpreting the Prophetic Word makes it pleasant to refer to. Because of this and combined with the impressive bibliography, this work is worthy of using for academic research, sermon writing, and personal Bible study.A common argument throughout this work is that God desires for his people to consecrate themselves to him by forming a counterculture, which he uses to define the establishment of his kingdom on earth. VanGemeren argues that this motif is present in the Prophets, the teaching of Jesus Christ, and the writings of the apostles. He provides excellent biblical evidence for this in each Prophet and in his closing chapter relates this to Christ and the apostles. His claim and argument are both rooted in Scripture as God has indeed been setting his people apart to be holy as he is holy from Creation on (Lev. 11:44-45; 1 Pt. 1:16).This is especially seen in the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants, heralded throughout all of the Old Testament (as VanGemeren shows us) and is continued and amplified in the ministry of Jesus and the apostles with the ushering in of the kingdom of God on earth and the indwelling of the Spirit in men and women. Judgment follows all who do not establish this “counterculture” while rest is rewarded to all who do. This argument from VanGemeren throughout this work is highly biblical and provides a holistic and refreshing lens through which to view prophetic literature. While the author is careful not to bring any interpretational biases into the writing of this book, there are times when he could be more straightforward in his own interpretation. While it is noble of him to allow the reader to interpret each prophetic writing on his or her own, it would have been helpful for VanGemeren to more strongly interpret each work and then allow the reader to evaluate it. The author seems to objectively, but standoffishly probe each Prophet. There are pros and cons with this approach and while his admittedly “open” presentation of prophetic literature made his work more concise and more easily readable, it would have been helpful for him to have been a bit more straightforward. Nevertheless, any frustrations experienced by the reader in this regard in chapters 4-11 are resolved with his conclusions and reasoning in chapter 12 which made the book for me.ConclusionIn closing, Interpreting the Prophetic Word is a book that deserves to be on every pastor’s bookshelf and should increase the amount of prophetic literature that is preached from the pulpit. Greater understanding, not only of the Prophets, but also of the Bible as a whole and the Lordship of Jesus Christ will all be gleaned from the reading of this book.

Another subject that I did not know a lot about. The subject seemed difficult and hard to really understandThis book brought great light to the subject, but it is a hard book and the author uses academic language that is not easy for all peopleIt was good though, but not something that I would like to read again

Purchased for Bible and Theology PhD program upon request of the program developer

Excellent reference / resource materiel.

Good price. exact product. Thanks!!

Awesome & Insightful book!!

little bit dirty

Van Gemeren has provided an incredibly useful resource for using the Prophets in the church. He is an excellent scholar on technical matters (see his editing of the NIDOTE but especially his Psalms commentary in the Expositor's Bible Commentary series--arguably the best commentary in that series) but also provides superb oversight of thematic issues that will help preachers understand, arrange, and teach the material in the light of its Old Testament context and New Testament teaching. The prophets, which are too often ignored in church, are incredibly exciting and illuminating when helpfully explained, as they are here. It is hard to read this volume without preaching it to yourself--a rare problem with evangelical biblical studies on the Old Testament. We might have wished for a little more work on poverty and social justice issues, a significant concern of the prophets that (some might say) doesn't come out as strongly as it should. On most critical issues, one will need to consult OT introductions and commentaries as dealing with such is not van Gemeren's primary purpose. For his helpful focus on "consummation" in Christ, his Kingdom, and (ultimately) the New Creation, Interpreting the Prophetic Word provides a valuable tool for understanding the message of the Prophets in their OT and NT contexts, which should lead preachers, teachers, and students to better application of the Prophets in today's world.
