What Do You Do With a Problem?, by Kobi Yamada

Review

A child struggles with the worry and anxiety that come with an unexpected problem. In a wonderful balance of text and pictures, the team responsible for What Do You Do With an Idea (2014) returns with another book inspiring children to feel good about themselves. A child frets about a problem that won't go away. "I wished it would just disappear. I tried everything I could to hide from it. I even found ways to disguise myself. But it still found me." The spare, direct narrative is accompanied by soft gray illustrations in pencil and watercolor. The sepia-toned figure of the child is set apart from the background and surrounded by lots of white space, visually isolating the problem, which is depicted as a purple storm cloud looming overhead. Color is added bit by bit as the storm cloud grows and its color becomes more saturated. With a backpack and umbrella, the child tries to escape the problem while the storm swirls, awash with compass points scattered across the pages. The pages brighten into splashes of yellow as the child decides to tackle the problem head-on and finds that it holds promise for unlooked-for opportunity. A straightforward, effective approach to helping children cope with one of life's commonplace yet emotionally fraught situations, this belongs on the shelf alongside Molly Bang's Sophie books. (Picture book. 4-7) --Kirkus ReviewsYamada and Besom follow What Do You Do with an Idea? with the story of a boy plagued by a problem, which Besom imagines as a violet cloud hanging over the boy's head. "I didn't want it. I didn't ask for it. I really didn't like having a problem, but it was there. The boy wanders through a medievalesque town, accompanied by sleek, silvery flying fish that dart about like swallows. Soon the cloud grows into a storm. "The more I avoided my problem, the more I saw it everywhere." At last the boy has an epiphany. Armed with goggles, his hair thrown back by the force of the storm's energy, he reaches into the heart of the cloud and finds light. "I discovered it had something beautiful inside. My problem held an opportunity!" Though some younger readers may find the story overly vague it's easy to imagine questions like What is his problem? and What is he talking about? popping up Yamada's inspirational prose and the romance of Besom's spreads make an impact. Ages 5-8. --Publishers Weekly

Elementary Teacher here. Yesterday I read the sister book to this one "what do you do with an idea.". Today I read this one. What my kids noticed about this book, is you can infer that an idea is born from a problem. At the end of the book, everything goes kind of yellow, just like the color of the idea. I thought it was amazing how all of the illustrations match together. Kids will notice them if you help them appreciate those things.Absolutely beautiful books. Extremely happy!

This is a great book with a valuable lesson and just enough depth for its intended audience. My 5 year old enjoyed the suspenseful build up as the "problem" got bigger and bigger. Then we've talked about problems he's had. 5 year olds have very cute problems. Anyhow, I get the criticism from one reviewer who basically said that the problem solving section lacked depth to tackle specific problems but honestly, this is about as much depth that a children's self-help book needs. Essentially, the message is you can't ignore it, you can't run away from it and you can't hide from it - you just have to "tackle it." AND most importantly, problems hold opportunities. I think this is a great message for helping to foster grit!

Kobi Yamada's books are entertaining for both children and adults. This is a great follow-up to "What do you with an idea?". In both books, the author writes about the feelings of being faced with an idea or a problem, mustering up courage and facing them. These are abstract concepts for children but the illustrator does a great job turning these abstract ideas into something concrete. Even so, my child is still a bit young but the book does provide us with some talking points. "Remember when you were scared to get up the slide? That's how this boy felt."Overall, these books are keepers. Even though my child is still a bit young to understand the abstract idea of problems, it's an entertaining read that is sure to grow with us as she gets older

I was really disappointed. I bought this for my child with anxiety about new things hoping that it'd be more of a 'solutions' type book. Instead, it sort of feeds the different ways to avoid tackling a problem. After the book is done describing the different ways that you cannot ignore a problem, it just says that you have to tackle it. Of course, we tried to talk it out and discuss methods of tackling problems, but we already do that and I hoped this book would reinforce the try try again type of solution. My daughter is VERY into books. And usually, when we get a new book, she wants to spend the next hour looking at it and rereading it. She didn't ask to take this book into her room or anything. It was done and she wasn't intrigued by it.It's an absolutely great book for maybe an older person. As an adult, I felt like it was really great to reinforce that we can't hide from our problems or bury them or whatever. but for a young child, it doesn't help them know what to DO with a problem.. just what not to do.

As a teacher, I'm hyper focused on teaching critical thinking skills. Part of doing that is encouraging kids to (try to) solve their own problems (at their age-appropriate levels, obviously!). This book opens up great discussion with my daughter when we read it. We talk about problems she has or has had and ways she's thought of them or how she interprets the drawings. It's a different experience with the book every time. Highly recommend.

I love this book and author. I have his other book on WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM? I gave each set of grandchildren each of these books. And they love the books too. Great mindstretchers to develop higher order thinking, critical thinking and creative thinking. Great for gifted children.

I have this book already, but ordered it as a Christmas gift for my son's teacher! It's such a great book with a nice message for kids! Great gift from anyone, but especially those in the mental health/helping field!

My son will be turning 5 and I spied these books at a local store (but bought them on Amazon because they were cheaper). I absolutely love the illustrations and the message. Truth be told, I'm a 36-year old mother of two and I walked away loving the message and I now apply it to my everyday life. It's a great strategy to see problems as something other than obstacles. I highly, highly recommend all books by Kobi Yamada!

Amazon.com Review

Being fully God and fully human, Jesus raised an enduring question for his followers: what exactly was His place in this world? In the classic Christ and Culture, H. Richard Niebuhr crafted a magisterial survey of the many ways of answering that question--and the related question of how Christ's followers understand their own place in the world. Niebuhr called the subject of this book "the double wrestle of the church with its Lord and with the cultural society with which it lives in symbiosis." And he described various understandings of Christ "against," "of," and "above" culture, as well as Christ "transforming" culture, and Christ in "paradoxical" relation to it. This 50th anniversary edition of Christ and Culture, with a foreword by theologian Martin E. Marty, is not easy reading. But it remains among the most gripping articulations of what is arguably the most basic ethical question of the Christian faith: how is Christ relevant to the world in which we live now? --Michael Joseph Gross

I wrestle with my appreciation for this book. I think the categories or types Niebuhr discusses and outlines are very helpful for the discussion of Christ and culture, and yet there were times where I felt he was almost portraying a caricature of the people he was presenting as examples of each approach. I know his presentation of Luther failed to adequately embrace the nuances of the great Reformer's evolving theology over the years. I though his presentation of Paul's thought was saddeningly simple at best and deceivingly stereotypical at worst. I understand why he created these types for the discussion, because they represent ideals which many proponents of different approaches to how to engage culture as a Christian fall into. And yet the 'types' were almost too pure to be comfortable for any one person to be associated with. I am just uncomfortable lumping Paul, Marcion, and Luther all together...despite the similarity in their thoughts which Niebuhr raises.Niebuhr's style was really hard for me to settle into as well. He tends to indulge in logical motifs, drawing out an idea and reiterating it multiple ways to better describe it and draw out some deeper thoughts about it. It's a rhetorical technique which yields a greater effect when spoken, in my opinion. As a reader I found my attention drifting easily. So it wasn't the easiest read, though there were places where I think Niebuhr really stumbled across an insightful way to describe something.Ultimately, I think it is a solid book for scholars dealing with engaging culture to read. And the categories/types Niebuhr discusses can probably be helpful to pastors as they strive to shepherd their people, to help them think well about how to engage culture as a Christian. Yet it's not the easiest read, so brace yourself.

I didn't know anything about Niebuhr. I learned about him one day from a material maintaining that to shape your spirit you should start with a classic language (Latin or Greek); also for getting a large religious perspective, beyond any dogmatic seclusion, any parochial confinement, you should read Niebuhr.Actually there were two brothers Niebuhr; both of them were great theologians. They lived in the US and belonged to the Protestant Church. Reinhold Niebuhr was the most famous; but I started by buying a book of the other, H. Richard Niebuhr, for a very cheap reason (as I was completely ignorant on both brothers, I bought the cheapest book I found). It was a very small book, annotated on almost all pages. The annotations were in Chinese: the guy who had read the book before me was a Chinese. The book was Christ and Culture. I think it is one of the most important theology books I have read.Christ and Culture - you can think also at it as Faith and Culture: what is the relationship between them.Niebuhr considers five different types of Christ-Culture relationships (of course, nobody could be strictly framed in one type or another):1. Faith against Culture (Tolstoi) - faith denies culture, you should make the choice - the risk is that denying the culture can lead to denying the world, it means denying God's Creation - also denying culture is actually a cultural fact, which leads to paradox2. Faith framed in Culture (Jefferson, Renan) - faith is a cultural phenomenon, explained through cultural facts - it means that faith is rationalized - which leads to keeping from faith only the rational3. Faith and Culture in sync (St. Thomas Aquinas) - faith and culture do not deny one another (as it was in the first case) - they live in agreement - the elements of faith that cannot be explained rationally belong to the realm of Revelation4. Faith and Culture in paradox (Luther, Kierkegaard) - though faith and culture do not deny one another (as it was in the first case) they do not live in agreement (as it was in case 3) - any act beyond faith (it means any cultural act, even keeping God's commandments, even good deeds) is alien to faith, alien to God, because it fatally belongs to this world, so it is idolatry - the faithful has to realize this tragic paradox; there is no escape from culture as we have to live in this world - keeping faith is the only way to salvation (while living in the world)5. Faith transforming Culture (Calvin) - the faith should be used as a driving force in transforming the culture (the society), leading it towards DivinityLet me quote here a little bit from the foreword (written by Martin E. Marty): Augustine left us The Two Cities, Pascal left us the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Kierkegaard brought us the Either/Or - they polished the archetypes; we have in the twentieth century I and Thou (Martin Buber), The Nature and Destiny of Man (Reinhold Niebuhr) and Christ and Culture (H. Richard Niebuhr).I tried to read The Nature and Destiny of Man, but I was not in the mood - I should take it sometime later. I also started to read I and Thou, several times, I was too lazy. But Christ and Culture, I read it breathlessly. It's not my first theology book. I have read some books of the great Christian Orthodox theologians of the Twentieth century (Schmemann, Lossky, among others) and I could talk days in a row about them - about their rigor, about the beauty of Eastern Christianity, that I belong to. The book of Niebuhr is different, and maybe one should start with it, to read then Tillich, to continue then in his own ways, while free of any parochial closeness.

This is a well organized argument presenting five sides to a critical problem between Christ and culture. Niebuhr argues Christ against culture, Christ of culture, Christ above culture, Christ and culture in paradox and finally Christ transforming culture. Although his postscript to these arguments is inconclusive, he does call for a decision, not from the community of faith but from the individual to decide. He begins with an impasse that Christ is sinless but culture is sinful overlaying this with veneers of scripture that seem to contradict. For instance, we are called out of the world but are also sent into the world. Throughout each argument Christ is presented as central but the application to culture swings from rejecting homes, property and the protecting hand of government, seen in the life of Tolstoy, to a harmony of Christ and culture. The latter has a danger of interpreting culture through Christ, but also Christ through culture.Although each of the five arguments is persuasive, Christ and the transformation of culture appear to be stronger theologically. Niebuhr calls the Christian with this view a `conversionist.' The argument is that God is our Creator and that his creation was `good'. The work of the Christian is to bring Christ into culture transforming it for our `good'. Culture itself is something God made and cannot be the source of sin. Therefore culture is neither good nor bad. The Christian who lives for Christ by keeping their focus on him in a positive and productive manner will bring a Christ-centeredness into culture. Virtues of hope, love and peace become part of everyday life.My disagreement is not with the various arguments presented but an agreement where there is no conclusion. Christ against culture has probably done more harm in creating separatists not only between Christ and culture but within the Body of Christ. Niebuhr correctly notes that very little has been accomplished in this view of Christ against culture within any point of history. Sin does not find its origin in culture although it finds a place there. Therefore culture must not be opposed and rejected escaping the community Christ came to serve. The first chapter of John's Gospel ratifies that Christ `became one of us' along with Philippians chapter three. Christ was born under Roman rule in occupied Judea (two cultures colliding together) yet He influenced both.Niebuhr's work still touches on the obvious debate among Christian leaders today of Christ and culture. It is strong in presentation but weak in current application of a postmodern culture. It leaves too much for the reader to interpret for themselves, even in Niebuhr's call for decision in his final chapter. Written near the end of a modern culture the examples are more historical. If this can be overcome by the reader it is vital material for arguing intellectually with a postmodern culture and presents five different perspectives. Unlike material that wants to make a `statement', Niebuhr crosses a difficult bridge that can appear dismantling of the church and its fundamental belief in Christ. He does not challenge the doctrine of Christ (eternal, incarnate, became man, died, buried, resurrected and ascended) but the commission given to the church concerning all that Christ has done. His tone is subtle avoiding all political overtones making the material relevant for our day fifty years after it was written. If each chapter could have a short journalistic story, from any time in history, explaining how a culture was impacted through Christ against, of, above, as a paradox and transformation of culture, it would attract far more attention in a postmodern culture of today.By Andrew Fox author of Change Through Challnge

Absolutely delightful, thought-provoking, educational and full of good humor. A new angle on mindfulness.

How Proust Can Change Your Life is a pleasure to read and to ponder. Its observations, though hardly original, seem especially worthwhile at a time when tweets pass for conversation and Facebook postings are a way to stay in touch with friends. Proust and his disciple Alain de Botton advise us to slow down; to take time not only to smell the coffee but savor a croissant or two along with it each morning as you languorously pore over your daily newspaper. Rather than looking for Mr. Right, become him--and start by listening to others rather than nattering endlessly about yourself. Note the beauty in the every day, and acknowledge the irony that one is never more alive or aware of life as when one's own health is threatened by illness. These are but a few of the bon mots found in Proust Can Change Your Life--a delightful literary "self-help" that really is helpful. If not ground-shakingly original, they are life-shakingly worthwhile. In addition to all of the above How Proust Can Change Your Life ponders how great literature can impact our lives and how real creativity is a way of seeing and feeling an experience more deeply and more profoundly than most. Very worthwhile--the sort of book I'm sure I will be returning to.

I have read several titles by this particular author and have NEVER been disappointed. I studied for a PhD in literature and psychology in my youth. This sort of analysis of Proust is a gem for modern life -- and a guide to appreciating Proust's world as well. Many of Proust's eccentric habits were doubtless "self-inflicted" but the reader will confront how complicated the requirements of his society were at the time. My first exposure was "On the Art of Travel." This is NOT a "Rick Steves" sort of volume with suggestions of places to visit and how to spend less money doing it. It is a first class analysis of what makes us WANT to travel and of what rewards our psyches achieve from it.Whether you beg, borrow or buy, this author will be a consistently valuable addition to your lifetime reading list.

Good enough to have read it 6 times and still not get all of it. I was taken by surprise at Proust's significance in history and myth -- beyond being a Monty Python joke. What is the name of the phenomenon wherein a person sees himself in an old painting? I will never look at a madelaine the same again. Thank you, Alain.

Its a great little book that gives one some perspective on the overall ideas of Proust. I found myself applying to life. I loved the idea of seeing other people you know inside faces and people in art / movies etc. Sometimes when you go to a gallery that has hundreds of portraits or saints etc. it can get a bit dry. Although it really does feel nice to see an old relatives likeness in something and then sit down ponder the idea and feel fresh when walking into the next room.

I would consider Alain De Botton one of the great modern philosophers of our time. The word philosopher might make you cringe, and I get it, but go listen to his interview on the Tim Ferris podcast. It will help in understanding his perspective on how a philosopher should function in the modern day. He also guides listeners to How Proust Can Change your Life as a good entry point into his work, what he believes in, and a book that he feels has held up since its release. I took the nod, and I’m happy I did.De Botton writes with clarity, concision, and wit. He turns the subject matter, Marcel Proust, and his book In Search of Lost Time, into a thoroughly enjoyable unconventional self-help manual. I say unconventional, but I can only hope the questions you ask yourself after reading this book become conventional in all sorts of ways.I try to imagine selling someone this book. For me, De Botton had me at the chapter titles. Just to name a few: How To Love Life Today, How To Take Your Time, How To Suffer Successfully, How To Be A Good Freind. Compelling questions to think about, and you’ll be surprised to find how Marcel Proust and his masterpiece In Search Of Lost Time provide a point of view on each.Paradoxically the book concludes with a chapter titled How To Put a Book Down. Simple advice but the message speaks to a much large theme that we all could benefit from. That Beneath every piece of art there is an author with a point of view on the world and the greatest homage we can pay to each is to see our world, for a short time, through their eyes. After that short time, it’s ok to admit that for all the beautiful qualities we might see in each genius work it might eventually prove to be silly, maniacal, false, or just wrong. And as you learn to embrace this indifference you’ll really start to see how Proust can change your life.

This book is a gem. Full of dry wit, the author imparts much wisdom with Proust's life as the backdrop. This book will be added to my shelf of favorites.

I’m a Proustian devotée and this book does not capture the true genius of Proust. It slogs along pragmatically completely missing Proust’s beauty of style.

Turquoise/Brown Micro-Fiber Purse-Style Quilt Stitched Bible / Book Cover - 1 Corinthians 13:4, 7 (Medium)

Size:Medium

Turquoise and Brown Micro-Fiber Purse-Style Bible Case has raised screened-printed text from 1 Corinthians 13, patterned quilt-stitching, slip pockets on the front and back and cross engraved, dual zipper-pulls. Inside is the convenience of a zipped mesh pocket and a pen loop. The Medium size accommodates Bibles such as The Holy Bible, NLT Reference Editions, Daily Study Bible for Women and The Life Application Bible - Personal size, or other books and Bibles up to: 6 5/8" x 9 5/8" x 1 3/4". Choose Size. Books and Bibles come in many sizes. Measure yours to ensure the perfect fit.

This is the second cover like this that I've bought. I liked the first one so much, but wanted a different color. This one is equally as good (perfect size, handy outside pockets, handy inside pocket for pen & highlighter, handy 'handles'). HOWEVER, on this one, the scripture quote on outside is PRINTED AT AN ANGLE. It's not a big problem, but a little jarring to this 'perfectionist'. :) (see photo)

As far as functionality is concerned, I have no complaint. My hardcover ESV Bible (several years old) fits and everything, and I like how there's a pocket on each side of the protector. I'm also quite pleased with the "purse" aspect; that was a major selling point for me, having the handles place where they are.I took a star off because the day it arrived, just some hours later, I noticed the lettering on the verse had started to rub off. It's been about a month now--and understand, I'm not "picking at it" or anything--but more of it has come off. It doesn't bother me /that/ much, because the color scheme and the pattern on the brown part are more striking anyway, but for those of you might care, be forewarned.

This is a nice size and will fit my even my large JPS Tanach and any book I choose to take. I wanted it because I like to read my own stuff when going for doctor visits. And since I study a lot, it also has enough room for my sticky notes, highlighters and notepads.I also like that the zipper is right side up with the handles rather than upside down like some. I find that kind to be awkward and most likely that's just me!

Quality cover, handles reinforced, detail stitching on the outside is pretty and understated. I’m not flashy so this is modest aYet very pretty and sturdy. I use it over a big bible. Plenty of pockets as described. Would recommend it to anyone.

Bought as a gift. Very nice looking and well made. My niece loved it! Recommend.

This holds so much more than my bible. It has side slits perfect for our church programs and is large enough to keep my Sunday School book in as well. I love it!!!

Really like my new Bible case. I choose the medium size and it fits my medium Bible and medium size notebook. Plus several pens. Good quality for a good price. Teal and brown go great together.

I love the case but I am concerned that one handle is not affixed as neatly as it should be. I wish they had checked the sewing prior. Maybe mine is just one that wasn't checked thoroughly by Quality Control. Despite that, it's a great case.

This book is very fantastic. Also, it comes with two CDs, but because of the weird white cushion kind of packaging, it seems like there's only one CD. This caused me frustration, because you can't run the examples in the book without the second CD. It wasn't until I held the book again and wondered why there felt like a hard object was inside that I tried to examine it. Turns out, the second CD was under the white cushion! You just have to peel it away and you'll see the CD. But I don't blame you if you thought it was missing too. It's packaged very weirdly, and very hard to notice.Nevertheless, the book is not only an excellent Assembly Language resource, but it's also packed with a Linux tutorial that will help you learn the command line.

It came without DVDs which were missing book is potentially of little value because instructions and examples are for out of date versions of software which would be useable if DVD had been include which contained software. It was my fault because small print said DVDs were missing so confirm DVDs are in book before you buy.

I just got this book in the mail so have no had a chance to go through the entire thing, but looking at the contents, I can tell at least a few chapters are wasted on topics such as:Installing Linux: pgs 79 - 114Using Linux: pgs 115 - 149I can forgive a dozen pages devoted to getting, installing and using NASM since that info might be needed by a real novice. IMO, if you are looking to do assembly-level programming on Linux, and you don't know anything about Linux and don't even have it installed.... better learn something easier first.... there are entire volumes dedicated to using Linux... no need to waste space in an ASM level programming book.Otherwise, this book looks very good. Much better than "Linux Assembly Language Programming". Don't get that book; I own both and this book has proven more useful in 2 days than the other one in 2 years.

This book begin with a good introduction of what assembly language is and who can be implemented, give you step by step all information you need to learn and use this language, if you use Linux on intel X86 based machines and you are interested in learn assembly, this book will be very helpful.

Review

“Simple, straightforward, and totally charming, Robin Ha’s Cook Korean! is yet another example of why every cookbook should actually be a comic book.”—Amanda Cohen, chef/owner Dirt Candy"Do you feel left out when all your cool friends mention their latest Korean food adventure talking about things like galbi, doenjang and different types of kimchi? Well, fear not, as Robin Ha made it her personal mission in her graphic novel cookbook filled with colorful illustrations, incredible stories, and insightful Korean recipes to not only educate but to instill confidence. So go pick up your copy of Cook Korean! and confidently engage in your next conversation about the hottest cuisine in America."—Deuki Hong, chef and author of Koreatown: A Cookbook"Cook Korean! is not just a wonderful collection of easy-to-follow recipes in comic form, it's also a delightful introduction to Korean culture.  I can't decide what's more mouthwatering--the food or Robin Ha's art!" —Michael Cho, cartoonist and illustrator"Illustrator Robin Ha's cheeky cartoon characters (a cape-clad superhero Spam can, a group of signing bean sprouts) guide the reader through the basics of Korean food in comic-book-style panels and drawings. [...] Her cheerful main character, Dengki, coaches readers through each step. Before you know it, you're cooking along with her."—Food & Wine magazine"This highly recommended collection is a solid introduction for readers who feel daunted by Korean cooking and ingredients."—Library Journal "Robin Ha has done a huge favor for anyone intimidated by the exotic ingredients and techniques of Korean cuisine. She’s created a comic book that lays out the fundamentals of kimchi, bibimbap and Korean barbecue in the form of recipe-cartoons.One of the most delightful cookbooks I’ve seen all year, “Cook Korean!” makes me want to drive to Buford Highway and fill a buggy with soybean paste, dried anchovies, green onions and tofu." —Wendell Brock, Atlanta-Journal Constitution  "The imaginative Ha, who emigrated from South Korea to Alabama as a teenager during the ’90s, fills the colorful pages of Cook Korean! with detailed images, ingredients, and step-by-step instructions for even the novice chef. The result is a super-comprehensive guide to literally every kind of Korean meal you could want, from the everyday sides (i.e. banchan) to the more elaborate noodle and rice dishes that could rival anything you’d find at a Korean restaurant." —Jinnie Lee and Maura M. Lynch, MyDomaine

This book is a really fun read. The concept of combining the graphic novel interface with the traditional cookbook works really well for this idea. This cookbook really addresses the basics of Korean cooking. I really enjoyed it because Korean is one of my favorite types of food to eat (by myself or with a group) and I love the concept of banchan. This book is entirely done in a "comic book" style. This means that every page is covered in color and images. It is very engaging, but I found myself missing the photographs of the items you are making. The book is neatly arranged, you have the welcoming pantry section that outlines the variety of ingredients/tools that you will use in the book, then a little description of each. Knowing so little about what I'm looking for in a Korean grocery store, I think I would like some brand names or pictures to help guide me. I know not all brands are created equal, and if I'm looking at buying a huge tub of gouchang paste, I'd like to know if I'm getting a good brand or a flavorless one (this is a common rant of mine for another day, not this book's fault). The rest of the book is sectioned out by category of food: Kimchee and Pickles, Seafood, Korean Fusion, etc. I was enthralled by the Kimchee and Pickles section because I find the kimchee to be really fascinating. I've asked several Korean's I know if they make it, and most of them leave it to their female family members (which means they do not know how it is done). There are a variety of kimchee recipes discussed here and they all seem to be relatively easy to accomplish. I want to start with them (despite the odd things fermenting food at home can end up like) and then move on to some of the more difficult dishes. I really enjoy that the recipes and ingredients are all mostly fresh and seem to include minimal cook time. However, some of the more complicated dishes I enjoy eating were not included, so I have to branch out and see what other cookbooks (or the internet in general) can offer.I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

This book is much more than a cookbook! You learn about Korean food and culture through entertaining comics, and the recipes show you how you can make many different dishes using the same handful of staples. The illustrations (there must be 100s) are adorable and descriptive. I especially love the gorgeous watercolors that mark each new chapter--the paintings somehow make the dishes look more delicious than high-res/styled photographs would. Even if you don't cook you'll enjoy the author's stories told through comics, the amazing artwork on each spread, and you'll probably end up cooking some tasty treats from the book!

R. A. Walker's husband here. My wife bought me this book as a treat while I was out of town visiting my mom. I have read it thorouh twice now (and when was the last time you did that with a cookbook?) and I have to say that I am totally in love with it. I have a pretty large collection of cookbooks, and I tend to pare them regularly of the ones that don't get used. I recently purged another Korean cookbook which had beautiful photographs and completely inscrutable recipes. I am certain that Cook Korean! will be on my cookbook shelf forever. Robin Ha has demystified a cuisine that I love to eat but, despite being a good and experienced cook of multiple cuisines and styles, have been afraid to try and make at home. I feel, after reading it, not only that I can make the recipes in the book, but that I have a handle on Korean cooking in a general sense. I tested this by looking up some recipes online and yep, they make a lot more sense to me now. Something about the comic book format (and I'm a lover of comics as well as of cuisine) communicates the process of cooking this food to me in a way that a bare recipe never did. Robin's story of her awakening to a love of home cooking and of the traditions that inform Korean cuisine are charming, informative, and really connect with the reader. If you long for the taste of yukgaejang and kimchi jiigang at home, but find these dishes intimidating, BUY THIS BOOK. You will not be sorry. You will make delicious Korean food at home. It will make you happy in your belly.

What a fun read! I bought this as a present for my sister and we spent an enjoyable (and at time contentious :)) evening making the Japchae recipe. We ended up making a few changes here and there but it was delicious. I highly recommend this book.

My family usually hides in fear at the thought of my 'wok terrorism' but this book may be the holy grail I needed to woo them back to my asian kitchen efforts. The recipes are easy to follow and I have had little difficulty finding the majority of ingredients. The cartoons are fun yet descriptive, and none of the recipes are complex enough to require multi-step images. The korean tacos are amazing and the marinade was equal to anything I have had at a good korean BBQ establishment. This cook book is on 'repeat play' and I have yet to screw any of these dishes up, which is a major complement to the author. Kudos!

“This is a sensitive and readable translation, whose poetic merits place it beyond other translations of Boethius's great text.”―Henry Taylor“A remarkable translation of one of the great masterpieces of philosophical literature.”―Gail Holst-Warhaft, Cornell University“A springboard for personal reflection and a source of literate pleasure.”―Steven Chabot, Library Journal“It's a remarkable book (though a short one), and its latest edition, rendered into fluid, compellingly immediate English by veteran translator David R. Slavitt, is very markedly the best one it's ever had...Slavitt presents the reader with Boethius brought to vibrant, vigorous life, to a degree that makes all previous English versions seem pedantic and irrelevant. Harvard University Press has crafted a physically beautiful volume, sturdy and small enough to fit in your pocket--an extremely fitting format for a book that's meant to be a comfort against life's ills. Reading this edition, even readers who've never encountered Boethius before will see at once why his book has meant so much to so many people for the last 1,500 years.”―Steve Donoghue, openlettersmonthly.com“This is a beautifully made little book that I have taken with me on a number of trips, partly just for the pleasure of holding it. At any time I would be glad to have it.”―John Wilson, Books and Culture

This book inspired Dante and many others for centuries. Written in prison by a person of great intellect and fortune, until he met with treachery and died in AD 524, he questions his Fate. It is a Theodicy, but it is presented as a conversation between the prisoner and Lady Philosophy. Boethius questions everything, but finds all the answers. It is a shame that such a beautiful (and short) work of art, with such profound, clear thinking is not required in all colleges. Even high school! I had to wait until after I graduated to be exposed to such rich ideas, rich vocabulary, and profound thought. It is a shame. The analogy of the Wheel of Fortune was made popular by this book and there is so much wisdom in Lady Philosophy. I can't tell you how much I loved this book for challenging me to reflect on philosophy on many levels, to a degree that not many books force. The insight gained by understanding this book is immense and influences my thoughts today.

Believe it or not, Boethius, at least in this translation, is a fun guy to read. He uses his thinking to avoid falling apart in the face of an ugly death. He has more faith in thought than I do, but it is an interesting exercise. This is not in the book but he remains dear to my heart as the author of the niftiest definition of a person I have ever seen: "The center of attribution of a rational nature." For all his brilliance he writes simply. Reading him feels like a chat with the guy next door, who just happens to be brilliant.

This translation is much better than the translation than the free kindle translation because it does not use archaic English, such as, thee, thou, wilt, didst, etc. I found that to be so annoying in the free version that I sought out a modern translation, and I am glad I found this one.About the book itself, it is a philosophy book, but not a staid one, the dialogue between Boethius and Lady Reason is engaging and it offers universal truths found in all religions and philosophies. The one draw back is that it needs a some revision for formatting errors for example it splits up the syllables in words, e.g., information might be written as "in for ma tion" This can be annoying but I think one would get use to it. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

I begin my comments with two disclaimers: (1) I would not presume to "review" Boethius, but I can offer a few superficial comments on this edition which may be of use to potential buyers; and (2) I do not know Latin, but can read Boethius only in translation. There were many passages in this translation that I recognized as being definitely idiomatically modern. Those passages felt anachronistic to me and made me doubt to some extent that I was reading "the real thing", at least as much as one can ever read "the real thing" in translation. On the whole, though, allowing for that one not insignificant complaint, I recommend this translation for its fine, clear style. The evident modernity of the translation made me want to read some other translation, so that when I was finished with this one, then just for something different, I chose Chaucer's Middle English translation, "Boece". I could not have successfully read "The Consolation of Philosophy" for the first time in Middle English, but I can read it in M.E. the second time. I am still chipping away at that, but so far Chaucer's translation seems distinctly more emotional to me than Slavitt's, and thus conveys a very different feeling. Maybe Chaucer and Slavitt have both impressed the emotional styles of their own ages onto the text? But how would I ever know? In any case, if the style of Slavitt's translation made me at once mostly happy, and yet needing to read another, then that is a sign of success for the translation. As for Lerer's introduction, and also the physical quality of the book, I second the favorable comments of another reviewer, Mr. Allen Shull; see his review.

Spoiler: Everything bad that happens to us is either punishment or a test. Everything good that happens to us is either a reward or a test. This amazing little book extrapolates on ideas of choice, chance, and how we as humans can best approach the difficulties that life throws at us. The physical book itself is a perfect size and weight to carry about.

I've never read this book before, although it was highly recommended to me. I think my main difficulty with it is the translation. The language is overly breezy and colloquial.

This is a wonderfully accessible and enjoyable translation, and the introduction is informative in many ways, ranging from the historical period to the literary tradition of Boethius. I taught the book in an undergrad intro to literature course and had great success with it. It is also a beautifully designed and printed book.

As a first time reader of philosophical thought I found this book to be incredibly accessible and influential. With beautiful lines of poetry and prose Boethius proves that philosophy doesn't have to be complicated or dry. It changed my perspective and helped me to better understand human existence. Read it, learn it, love it; you won't be sorry.
