I am honored to have met Ms. Rough, but even if I hadn't, I would be eager to recommend her novella-length work. While this, generally, is a story about Ms. Rough's journey to learn more about her Estonian great-grandmother, her lush, insightful observations illustrate a universal longing for adventure as well as the desire to understand one's past (so as to fully live in the present).As I knew nothing--NOTHING--about Estonia, I was delighted to be invited into Ms. Rough's adventures. I now have a colorful sense of Estonia's earthy people, their language, the smell of the sea and the simplicity of their lives . . . and yes, the temperature of their saunas.I highly recommend this jewel of a story.

It was so satisfying to sit down and enter into this story. Bonnie Rough writes in such an engaging way, I found I became so immersed in the story, I forgot where I was in my own world. For me, that is the best compliment I can give the writer. Bonnie writes in an authentic, honest, and open way that is was hard not to be pulled in. There are so many scenes I want to share, but I also don't want to take away your experience of the book. Just know, it's thoughtfully written, you will travel to new places, and you will always connect saunas with this book. I knew nothing about Estonia when beginning this book and feel Bonnie opened up a new place for me. Really, a lovely, enjoyable read.

The Girls, Alone is very well-written. The author's voice is authentic and revealing, descriptive and clear. I felt along for the ride as she and her travel companion searched for answers and exposed more questions. I was surprised by the humor and allured by the mundane aspects of their travels, encounters and locales. As an avid shvitzer, I appreciated the sauna adventures. Rough's insightful descriptions of human bodies -- her own, her companion and those they met along the way -- show how each unique vessel provides a glimpse into the collective nature of our human condition.

As other reviewers noted, I couldn't have located Estonia on a map. Having read this short book, however, I am left with little interest in Estonia -- but an eagerness to read more by the talented author. I have already picked up her earlier memoir because I read this. Her writing is engaging, with humor as well as insight. She brings fresh views of motherhood as well as writing ....this was short, but powerful. Very glad to have discovered the book, and the author.

Bonnie Rough's tale of her travels and quest for deeper understanding of her Estonian roots is an honest and haunting account of what so many of us long for. We all hope that our own brief time on earth is meaningful. As we get older, we see that what defines meaningful are the intangibles we pass from one generation to the next. Bonnie's narrative style makes it easy to get lost right alongside her and Mary. And her stripped honesty comes off not as naivety, but as perhaps the only solid way to connect us all -- skin tags, mispronunciations, folds and flaws. It is a must-read for any woman who's ever wondered how the line of mothers from her own past collide into her one imperfect being.

I love books when, after a page or two, you forget your reading a book as you become more and more absorbed by the story and the characters. This is one of those books. The writing is transporting and memorable; personal without being indulgent. After reading this, I feel like I've not only been to Estonia but, more importantly, inside the writer's mind. In short, this is a beautiful book that hits all the right notes - and not too many either: at just 69 pages, the length feels perfect too.

I so wanted to love this book and to really learn something from it about Estonia's difficult history as it's not a topic I've encountered often. However, I wasn't hooked by the descriptions of food and felt myself wanting to ask more questions of the people the author encounters. In the end, it's exactly what it says - 6 days in a country that is certainly difficult to navigate at times and I don't know that I ended with much more information than that with which I began.

The author's charming ability to make fun of herself and take herself seriously make her a delightful travel companion as she investigates lineage, the ravages of war on a nation, the ravages of experience on bodies, and the meaning of place and home. She inspires me to enjoy my own place, time, and age, and also made me want to hop on the next flight to my matrilineal origins!

Before I even talk about this book let’s talk about the setting. Living in Southwest Missouri my entire life (I was born in Springfield) I am familiar with the local Amish communities. I’ve moved just a bit north of Springfield and enjoy visiting the local (smaller) Amish community in Dunnegan. Mainly, the bulk foods store (hello spices!) and the bakery (hello extra pounds!). There are a few small communities in this rural area of both Amish and Mennonite. This book was set in a much larger community near Seymour which is south of Springfield. When Mom and dad rebuilt the barn, or as I call it My Inheritance, they hired Amish from this community. It was refreshing to read about things that I am so very familiar with between the shows in Branson and things around Springfield (Bass Pro Shops and Fantastic Caverns – can you believe I’ve lived her my entire life and have never been there, despite driving past it twice a day to and from work!). It was a definite squee moment for me to realize that this was my stomping grounds, my comfort space, my home. OK, enough of that, let’s talk book.I truly loved this book and it was a great break from the suspense and mystery I’ve been reading lately. I need to mix it up frequently to prevent me from getting overly burnt out on any one genre (anyone remember my romance melt down late last year?). This book touches on a couple of difficult topics (domestic assault and alcoholism) but keeps it to such a minimum that I almost feel like glosses over it to some degree. I had a hard time with the idea that when Faith reveals that tidbit from her past it’s never explored at all. ‘No man should ever do that’ kind of mentality without the deeper exploration of how it is currently effecting her life and her idea that marriage is not for her because of it. When she does go on to fall in love and choose marriage it’s still left unaddressed. I found that a touch uncomfortable. If you mention it, it bothers you. If you are against marriage because of it, it bothers you. You don’t not take steps to heal from that and expect everything to turn out rosy. That felt a bit glossed over but it didn’t take away from the bigger picture.Let’s face it, we knew from the get go that Noah and Faith were going to explore a future together. They went through the same thing that ever reluctant couple goes through that really brings out the Gibbs’ smack in me. She might leave. I want to leave. She was with that tall English man. He must have a girlfriend. She might leave. I can’t trust another man. She might… STOP! Yes, she might leave. Yes, he’s a man and you haven’t had a great experience there but for the love of gravy stop. If you don’t actually talk to each other and let other people make your plans you are only digging your own misery. Communication people. True, deep, lasting relationship are build first on communication. Once they all (Faith, Noah, even her family) learned how to communicate their feelings and hurts then things can move forward. It took a long time (kinda like life right?) but communication lead to so much greatness. I loved the returning of Faith to the idea of faith. Not necessarily the Amish faith but a trust and relationship with God. Something she had left behind because of the hurts her she left her family with. And stayed away from because of the hurts her husband had heaped on. And a reconciliation of those hurts into the arms of God.

Going Home by Wanda Brunstetter is a very good book an in fact reading this book a few years ago started me on being a follower hers. I have read over fifty of her books an they are just like this one just great. There are times in a young persons life that they are scared to go home after being gone for several years. This is one of those stories about a young mother with a daughter and she lost her husband one day an way to in their short lives/. I truly hope after you read this book you will know that God is always there, just waiting for you to ask him to help you get back were you belong even if you are scared things will always turn out for you in the right way. Parents no matter what will always welcome back their child. Enjoy every page of this story an then get the next one an the next you will never run out of good books to read, always please remember to send a message to the author letting them know how much you enjoyed their books and then next is make you view of the story in a review letting others know. Tell all your friends about what you have read an ask them to also share with other by word of mouth is the best way to get the message out.

Childhood memories are always there, no matter how far one goes. Wanting the best for her daughter, after husband is killed is where she returned. Was not easy for Faith, wanting to express herself in music, she left at 18. Wasn't all she thought, the bars, husband drinking. A story of lessons, for her, and her parents. Can she realize God working in her life,through all of this and return to the faith and the lifestyle once again. Heartwarming style for all will enjoy, if you like Amish stories.

Faith felt growing up in a strict Amish family that she wasn't accepted or fully loved. At eighteen Faith sets off to entertain people with her music and jokes. After ten years of a fairly successful career, having a child, and becoming a widow she heads home to find a more stable life for her daughter.Life is hard learning to adjust to the Amish ways for Faith and her daughter. Faith has to find her way back to God, learn to trust him. Her parents and her need to learn to forgive each other. And of course there is a romance in there.I enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Loved the Jamesprt use (my one room schoolhouse became the Amish school).This book was okay but I got tired of her fearing several things over and over and over. I got tired of premise of her leaving her daughter.And what she was in the English. World was a comedian .it a joke teller. For me that setup as her occupation was not believable.

I chose a 4 star rating because, although I enjoyed the story , it seemed to evolve too slowly. I loved the fact that even though Faith couldn't see it, God puts obstacles in our paths to give us time to realize that He knows exactly what our needs are and for us to accept His will for us! I would recommend this book for anyone who needs encouraged to wait for God's will in their life..

What an amazing story! This is a book that is deserving of a 5 Star rating. The characters were well thought out and their personalities came alive on the pages. The subject matter sure drew a line between personal satisfaction and personal responsibility for loved ones. I also felt that this book showed the importance of communication. I feel like I’ve kind of had the wrong idea about it for many years.Do I believe that the planets align to give you a perfect day? I don’t know what the planets were up to the day I met my husband by chance. I don’t know where Venus was when we got our house appraised for what we needed it to appraise for to get approved. I don’t know if there is anything that will make me believe in astrology guiding my life because I’m too cynical and nothing is that easy. The book does not claim that this is a hard science, but leans more to the fact that astrology is an introspective method of learning more about yourself and others. Surrounded by myth and history, astrology is a fascinating topic and Steyson does a great job of keeping it fun and interesting. After discussing what astrology is, Steyson moves into details of each astrological sign. This is a great book to read and learn more about yourself and close friends and families!

I know people who love the idea of astrology. People asking your sign and then making judgments based on your answer. Admittedly, I am one of those people. I have always been curious about the concepts behind astrology but never really had enough motivation to put forth the effort to do research. It’s also difficult to locate any information on the matter because I am not aware of any classes on the subject. That and the Internet is a mixed bag. Apparently, astrology has a long history and does deserve its own subject. I learned so much from this book and that was just from the intro. From Babylon to Alexander the Great, I had no idea the importance that star-gazing was to ancient civilizations. The book also elaborates on the importance of the planets and the various signs and their meanings. Honestly, I skimmed around quite a bit because the information is quite dense. I had no idea the importance that planets had on your sign. Though, I am glad about this buy because when I get the chance to truly delve in, it will be quite illuminating.

A friend of mine that is interested in astrology suggested I find a book that went into more detail. ‘Astrology Uncovered’ by Julia Steyson fits the bill nicely. It is not too long, which is something that is especially appealing to me with the many constraints on my time, but very engaging and written for people interested in the basics and some history on the subject.With general rules for and a fairly thorough explanation of the planets, the zodiac signs and how to read a chart, I have found this book to be both informative and enlightening. It is well-organized and well-written, and would make for an excellent quick-reference book.I believe it is definitely a great guide for someone new to the subject matter, and well worth the money, as it would be referred to again and again.

This book is not too long of a book, but it is a very engaging and well written read. This book also includes some history on Astrology and it is really interesting. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is wanting to learn about astrology. This book explains the planets and how the various Zodiac signs work together and how the planets influence our choices and outcomes. I really enjoyed this book and is a book that I can reference in the future as well.

I'm so excited to read this book, I haven't yet. But I did get it quickly. It's nor too thick and I like the fact It's paperback.

This book starts out with a basic description of astrology. It is a decent length and goes into good depth about astrology. It is a great book for beginners. I really enjoyed reading it.

This book is great! I purchased this book for my mother, after reading it myself in English I thought it would be great for my mother to read so I purchased the Spanish version. I think it is a great book because not only does it give you great insights from two of the most joyous people on this planet, but it also makes your mind think in a way I had never thought of things before. We are so caught up in our every day lives and the rush of getting everything done and complain about the small things that we never take a step back and reflect on things such as joy and that's what I love about this book. It helps you look at life and situations in life in a different perspective and how to instead of looking for things in a negative way to then turn it into a positive because after all we are all in this planet together and we only get one life that is so precious and that is what Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama try to help us see the good in people and in life! I had never previously read books that either of these gentlemen have written but after reading this book I have ventured off to reading some of their previous work. Great great ready!

Excellent!!! I have always admired Dalai Lama, he gives an example and lots of tips to have a better life. I knew little about Bishop Tutu, whom I now admired as much as Dalai Lama. It is the type of book to have always handy because it has the reply to many of our dayly life problems and questions in a humurous way.

This is one of the most beautiful, wise, inspiring, warm and humane books I have ever read. It is the gift for the humanity of two people who have attained the human fullness by two different ways: east and west. But the book doesn't only show you holy and enlightened people, but real human beings: their sufferings, joys, feelings, and hope. It also has very interesting comments regarding the scientific research of the subjects in question.Is awesome the way this book awake our real human nature and transfer the compassion, love, and joy of the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. It's like you're there, talking to them.

I read it first and then I bought this Spanish version for my mom. I like that besides the Dalai Lama & Bishop interactions the author includes research about the topics being discussed in the book.

This is an intimate conversation with two giants! It is a must have and read.You will have a path to peace (i.e. Joy and Happiness) reading this book!

Marty Sklar was a student at UCLA and editor of its Daily Bruin newspaper in 1955 when he was recruited to create an 1890s-themed newspaper, The Disneyland News, a month before the theme park opened. After graduating, he joined Disneyland full-time in 1956, where he held responsibility for most of the park's publicity and marketing materials. In 1961, he moved to WED Enterprises, renamed in 1986 to Walt Disney Imagineering, where he worked on attractions for the 1964 New York World's Fair. For nearly ten years, he wrote personal materials for Walt Disney for use in publications, television and special films. In 1974 he became vice president of concepts/planning, and guided the creative development of EPCOT. As vice president of creative development, executive vice president and then president of Imagineering for nine years, Sklar supervised the design and construction of Tokyo Disneyland, the Disney-MGM Studios, Disneyland Paris, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Disney California Adventure Park, Tokyo DisneySea, the Walt Disney Studios Park and most recently Hong Kong Disneyland.

I'm sure my expectations were too high for this book but considering that Marty Sklar was a writer and journalist and the book was published by Disney Editions, I expected it to be better written and more compelling. I'm not sure what "Disney Editions" is but this book comes across like a self-published autobiography. In particular, the last quarter of the book really limped to the finish line. The book would have benefited from a great deal more editing both in terms of trimming content and sharpening the prose. There were a few highlights but overall the book was somewhat disappointing.

Marty Sklar started his career with Disney in 1955, one month prior to the opening of Disneyland. He remained with the company until retiring in 2009, and is the only Disney employee to have participated in the design and opening of all 11 currently operating Disney theme parks (Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney Hollywood Studios, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, Disneyland Paris, and Walt Disney Studios Park). Though he started in marketing, he quickly found a home at WED Enterprises / Walt Disney Imagineering where he eventually ended up leading the organization for more than 30 years until his transition to "Ambassador for Walt Disney Imagineering" leading up to his retirement in 2009.This book is a "memoir" of the author's 50+ years working for Walt Disney Productions/The Walt Disney Company, and includes chapters about the development of all of the theme parks, as well as a chapter about the author's time at UCLA and his association with Coach John Wooden. It also includes "Mickey's Ten Commandments", a list of ten key principles for theme park design that have become legendary in their own right. The book also includes 3 additional lists of "Mickey's Ten (more) Commandments", focusing on leadership and followship. Because of the close working relationship the author had with Walt Disney, this book provides an intimate look at the impact of Walt's death on the company.The role that Marty Sklar has played in the success of the Walt Disney Company and Disney Theme Parks can't be understated. In his early days at WED, Marty wrote many of Walt Disney's speeches, presentations, and film scripts, including the script for the Epcot film (which was the last film Walt recorded before his death in December 1966). It was Marty Sklar who coined the famous definition of imagineering: "the blending of creative imagination and technical know-how." Later he was pivotal in the design and creation of Epcot and every other Disney theme park since.As a fan of Disney theme parks in general and Imagineering in specific, buying and reading this book was a no-brainer for me. Despite that, I was initially somewhat skeptical about this book, thinking that it wouldn't provide the level of detail and insight that I like most in books about Disney parks and Imagineering. I was worried it would be a white-washed memoir that would retell the stories found in the other books in my Disney/Imagineering library. I needn't have worried at all.After reading the introduction, I was hooked. While many memoirs like this tend to gloss over details and omit "unpleasant" or controversial stories, this isn't the case with this book at all. This book is a welcomed addition to my library, and one that I expect I will read and re-read again and again.If I have one minor quibble with the book it's the lack of an index, which would be helpful in finding stories about the many people that the author worked with during his time at Disney.I strongly recommend this book to any fan of Disney theme parks. You won't be disappointed!

About time someone with Marty's perspective has written something on the subject of Disneyland, Walt and the parks.Yes, there's been some great books written by seminal artists and some in management, but Marty's particular place in Disneyland history is very specific: he came in young and was immediately in a position to act as the wordsmith for Walt. That's unique.I'm a huge Disneyland collector and historian. I will admit I had some reservations at first, thinking the book might cover what's already been told or worse yet, be a fluff piece due to Marty's high stature even now as a statesman, but those fears faded as I read lots of great personal nuggets that can only come from experience.I happen to love the "Waltism" that seemed to take over Disney's presentation of words both in the park and on TV around the time Disneyland came to be. It's an unpretentious slickness that started with Disneyland's opening and continued through his final film presentation of "The EPCOT Film" in 1966. I always knew it was Marty and had read of his contribution, but in , "Dream It! An amazing book written by an amazing person. He goes into great detail behind the planning and history of a lot of Disney monuments (Winnie’s) like Epcot spaceship earth, the windows on Main Street, all the Disney castle, etc, this book is just amazing if you want to know more about the Imagineering life through the eyes of one of their greatest legends. This book completely changed my view of Disney parks and the company.

As we get further from Walt Disney's life, you realize how smart the man was and how talented his teams were. His leadership is still at work and is timeless. Marty Sklar does a great job in showing us how you also can "Do it by Dreaming It" and more than that by believing!

I had the opportunity to see Marty Sklar during Epcot's 25th anniversary celebration on October 1, 2007. He was giving a speech about the history of Epcot, which included lots of interesting tidbits about the park. Since we were not allowed to record anything, I was a bit disappointed because I couldn't remember all of those interesting details. No worries, though. With his book it's all there in great detail. It's as if he had taken notes for all of us there that day. Mr. Sklar is the only Disney employee to have been at every Disney park opening, including Disneyland with Walt himself. I highly recommend this book for any Disney fan.

You will not receive the complete book with this purchase. Four chapters, two regarding setting up php email service, one for social media integration and authentication and one for building a shopping cart are not in the book but are instead listed as being "web edition" and you must register your book to access the content online. Two of these items are listed on the back cover of the book as important topics within so it is pretty unacceptable they place content like that online instead of the book. It wouldn't be that big of a deal except that I have followed the directions in the text, visited their website and created an account and registered my book. Upon attempting to access the web content for the four web edition chapters I do not get a link to click which gives me access to any content. I see that I have registered the product but I do not have access to any form of digital content. Attempts to contact the company have gone unanswered and I am very disappointed with this purchase as social media integration was one of the reasons I purchased the book. I will also add that I HATE web based content, I buy books because that is the way I want to learn, i admit it is nice to have access to the code to copy and paste if I need to but I can't even access that if I wanted to.

Many the pages in the book (about halfway through) were printed upside down, and not even all the way on the page. I wouldn't've bothered writing a review if I could've returned it, but I waited too long, so now I'm just going to complain about the defective product in a review.

I had no problems registering the Kindle version, downloading the extra chapters, downloading the source code, and accessing the web version. I just went to the site, signed in (I have used it before), entered the ISBN on the "Accessing the Free Web Edition" page that is just before section I. I had to answer one question from the content of the Kindle edition, and all the on-line content was available. I used a previous edition of this book several years ago to write a web-based database program. I am moving it to a server that uses PHP 7. I have already read some of this book and I find that it is exactly what I need to port my MySQL database to PHP 7.

This is a good book, with tons of PHP information. The authors are good writers and definitely know PHP rather well. I started with zero PHP knowledge and after a few hundred pages, PHP seemed easy and natural to me. The book covers the basics of PHP as well as some of the advanced topics (classes, interfaces, errors, exceptions, autoloaders, etc.). I didn't have any use for the database parts of the book (because that part is already taken care of for me). However, the PHP chapters were quite useful.

This is the book that made my web development dreams a reality. It's amazing how the authors ably captured the fundamentals of PHP in a book of this size. The web security section forced me to view web application security differently. The workings of PHP functions were elusive and mysterious until I read this book. PHP now does my bidding. It's hard for anyone to go through the entire book without being infected with sound coding habits that matter in production. 5 stars!

Why so many 1 star reviews?This book is great, doesn't hold your hands and moves at a fairly fast pace. In my view, this is not a beginners book but as long as you have a good working knowledge of basic web principles and programming fundamentals from any language this book has great value for anyone wanting to learn PHP.The MYSQL section is also very informative just not as in depth as the PHP section, however it does enough to get you going with working on the web. The MYSQL section does not dive into deep database design principles, however that is not the scope of this book. I'm glad it kept it simple as the main goals are to get an interactive website up and running.I have thoroughly enjoyed the book and still am learning
